The Truce at Bakura, a 1993 Star Wars novel by Kathy Tyers, picks up right after *Return of the Jedi* and precedes the *Jedi Prince* young-reader series. An audiobook version, narrated by Anthony Heald, was later released, and Galoob produced Micro Machines models based on the book's ships and characters.
In the story, the Rebel Alliance intercepts an Imperial probe carrying a distress call for the Emperor while recovering from their Endor victory. The message warns of a lizardlike alien race invading the Outer Rim planet Bakura. With Palpatine dead and the Imperial fleet in disarray, Luke Skywalker volunteers to lead a force to stop the invasion. Upon arrival, the Rebels must ally with the local Imperial garrison to fight the reptilian Ssi-Ruuk, who use a process called "entechment" to power their technology by harvesting life energy. The Ssi-Ruuk are especially interested in Luke, believing his Force abilities could let them entech beings from a distance. Obi-Wan Kenobi appears to Luke, warning him of the danger if the Ssi-Ruuk spread this technology. The Ssi-Ruuk cannot sense the Force themselves but rely on a brainwashed, Force-sensitive human named Dev Sibwarra.
On a personal level, Luke is distracted by Senator Gaeriel Captison of Bakura, despite her religious objections to the Jedi. Leia and Han Solo struggle to find time for their new relationship. Leia, testing diplomatic waters on a world that joined the Empire only three years earlier, finds Bakura resents Imperial rule—as do some Imperials, like Commander Pter Thanas—though Governor Wilek Nereus suppresses dissent. Leia also copes with the revelation that Darth Vader is her father, Anakin Skywalker, when his spirit visits seeking forgiveness.
Governor Nereus eventually tries to hand Luke over to the Ssi-Ruuk in exchange for their retreat. Luke escapes after being kidnapped, frees Dev from brainwashing, and considers taking him as an apprentice, but Dev dies of his wounds. The joint Rebel-Imperial force repels the Ssi-Ruuk, and during the chaos, Bakuran resistance cells overthrow Nereus. Bakura then joins the Rebel Alliance. Commander Thanas defects, though not before destroying the Rebel cruiser *Flurry*. New Republic Intelligence later calls the battle the "Bakura Incident" and advises suppressing public knowledge of the Ssi-Ruuk, a controversial decision. Luke finally connects with Gaeriel b
